i hear through the jungle drums that people in america are giving up their telephone landlines and sticking with their mobile phones.
it sounds like a good idea.
save a few quid, too.
what do you think?
shall we all go wireless?
i suppose it would be cheaper still to send letters to each other, though.

If you've got a decent signal, TalkTalk do a £25pm landline and broadband package. BT can get stuffed.

My landline is needed for broadband connection - doesn't get used for much else these days. But it is less likely to get lost/drowned/broken to pieces or have its number changed so I think I'm for keeping it

my family never did have a land line , it`s saved us a hell of a lot of money. and tbh, why do you need a landline if you have a mobile , you don`t need a phoneline for broadband these dayys

Pro We have both but rarely use the land line although the blonde does for local calls so i don't think it will be going anytime soon, you have a point though x

Pro next time my contract is up for renewal with bt, i think i might opt out.

Bt held the monopoly for so long and have a lot of customers who are loyal 'just because' who never review what they have, means BT charge the earth and give a shitey service.
Having a range of telephone providers has meant that I've not had to pay BT in years, I wouldn't give up the landline coz
a) broadband (i know u can get dongle things but they confuse me)
b) cheaper to use landline than my mobile for calls
c) no charging of battery or topping up required!
d) nice to have in emergencies or for long gossips
letters would be nice, but given the rightly nicknamed 'SNAIL MAIL' where post is now delivered at about lunchtime I hardly ever write to anyone.

you're right about the cost of calls, though if you get a good enough package on the mobile, you can get lots of free minutes, too.

here in the US, people actually spend more on their mobiles, than they do on their landlines, what with buying minutes, texting charges, internet charges, voicemail charges, buying accessories or replacement parts.
A landline, you just plug into the wall, and answer it when it rings, easy-peasy. The telephone stops working, get a new one for $10 or $20, get a phone bill once a month to yell about--"WHO called Singapore!?!"

Nope. I don't bother with a landline either. I got fed up being spanked for line rental and all the rest and ditched it. Mobiles all the way now.

We've still got our landline and use broadband. We find it's much cheaper for calls than mobiles if you take advantage of their cheap call offers. We have got a mobile, (hubby and I share one as we're nearly always together anyway) but rarely use it so it hardly costs us anything (it's on pay as you go)
So no, I wouldn't give up the landline.

there are lots of advantages to having a mobile only I guess, but it stops you getting calls from abroad, or leastwise, long chatty calls, cos that would be way too expensive. Plus calling abroad, unless you do it from the office!!!!

NO to cell phones...I hate them as well as the landline, but need that for the internet.
