how well do you remember your childhood?

i can remember seeing a car crash on the way to school, when a little girl was hit and i can still see her face covered in blood.
i can remember finding money on the pavement.
i can remember standing in a tin bath thing and my mum chucking cold water over me in the summer.
i can remember calling round to see the old lady after school to see if she needed any jobs doing.
i can remember my paper round and running like mad down the last street to catch the bus - even if i was a few minutes late, the bus driver would wait for me.
i can remember going to my rich auntie's house and being amazed at the sight of a swimming pool that was five times the size of our back yard.
i remember daydreaming and riding my pedal bike straight into the back of a parked car and going right over the roof. i was concussed and the eye specialist thingy person says that's probably what gave me my squiffy vision now.

and i can remember different schools i went to.
but it's not a lot is it?

some people tell me they can even remember being babies.
i've never been able to and i feel a bit cheated.

that's enough about me.

I can still remember things like my first day at school, and quite a lot of other stuff about my primary school. I used to be able to remember things like learning to walk, and sitting in my baby highchair - I had a toy that was a plastic ball with a sucker on one end so that you could stick it to the plastic cross bar and bat the ball (which was clear plastic, filled with much smaller plastic balls) with your little baby hands! Those kinds of memories have faded over time though.

I've heard before that some people don't remember their childhoods at all, which amazes me, but maybe that's because I remember so much of mine. It was rubbish, by the way - I like being an adult much better!

  thanks for that - it seems incredible to me that you can remember being a baby! i'm a bit jealous i must admit - though i agree with you...i'm much happier being older!

    I didn't even realise it was unusual to remember stuff like that until I was a lot older.

My earliest recollection is my Mum bringing my brother home from hospital so I was 3years 2months.

Unless it was my next brother then I'd have been 4years 8months or my youngest brother then I'd have been 6years 2months. But I'm sure it wasn't these two!

I do remember nursery school and falling off a seesaw and then having my head rubbed with butter by a dinnerlady (she gave me a biscuit too!)

I have so many wonderful childhood memories and hope that my Grandchildren will look back with fond memories.

I'm like you...can't remember much about my infancy before three when my first memory kicks in of going to meet my Dad at the coach station after he came home from Africa...don't know how long he was out there but do remember him coming home...remember more after five though but my teens seem to be a big blank apart from traumas and can't remember much at all about my time in London...seemed to be work, parties, boys and drinking too much until I gave it up...LOL...maybe that was why I can't remember much about it...did fall a lot when a child...had grazed knees a lot and bumps on my head... GBHs...XXX

  thanks jen - strangely enough, you reminded me of the fact that i regularly fell - always seemed to have bloody knees! i can remember a fair bit of teenage, it's just those first formative years that are a bit of a blur!

    I think kids in our days used to be allowed to scoot or cycle or roller skate all over the place, and, as a result, knees and elbows got scraped pretty regularly...LOL...can remember plasters on knees and elbows and scabs afterwards often...now the kids wear so much protective gear, these are avoided, but preferred our days when far less hampered by them....GBHs...XX

I can actually remember sitting up in my pram when I must have only been maybe a year old. I can remember my first day at school. I can remember falling down in the playground and the teacher putting dettol on my head. That REALLY hurt!! I can remember running into my Mums arms for a hug at the end of the day. AND sorry to be a downer. But I remember the day Mum died really really clearly and I was only nine. I wonder if I remember those things because I need to hang on to them. Ooh sorry guys, that was a bit depressing really.

  you're right about the dramatic intense moments. we do tend to remember them - it's a sort of immortality, i think.

    That's what I think too. But I am grateful for them.
    It's like a photo album in my head, and I treasure it. Blimey. Must be time for bed then.........

i don't remember what i first remember, it's more what I've been told as I've grown. The thing I remember being told about is when my friend who was a year younger than me started at my nursery (i think) and the teacher asked me moms name. i said mummy and my friend laughed and said no it's X and I said, no it's mummy.

But I don't actually remember it.

So, my earliest actual memory? probably drinking milk from cartons at break time at infant school. I used to love my infant school.

1981/82, my parents were in the beginnings of of a messy divorce, mum tried to enroll me in business college but I resisted, I was working at a local restaurant, just got my driver's license that year, and was driving a 1967 Rambler--no power steering, no disc brakes, no radio, and a manual choke--but it ran like a dream, I went hiking a lot in the local woods and other places, and disco was going out and country music and cowboy dancing was becoming all the rage.

I remember sitting in front of the telly watching "Paint With Nancy" while eating baked beans from a glass bowl (so '70s).

I remember learning how to fry ants with a magnifying glass during the long hot summer of '76.

I remember the smell of burning plastic as my brother and I set fire to my eldest brother's model Harrier jump jet.

I remember being useless at racing either of my brother on a scalectrix track.

I remember my brother's train-set in the attic.

I remember the size of the spiders up there.

    The furthest I can think back is probably feeding MissD bread and jam while I was sat in my high chair. I think I was about 2years old.
    
    (MissD was our little dog, a dachshund/spaniel cross with a penchant for bread and jam)

I don't know if I remember my first day at school - with a tartan case full of sweets to bribe friends - or whether my parents have 'planted' the memory.

I remember hearing adders hiss whilst out walking with my granddad.

I remember agonising over the choice between a quarter of pear drops or a jamboree bag in the village shop.

But - like you - nothing from a baby, toddler or even pre-school years!
