seriously - for once ...

is it safe?
i'm taking ibuprofen tablets to try and reduce the pain of sciatica which is crippling me at the moment.
i can't seem to shake it off.
i think the tablets are helping take the edge off it, but i instinctively distrust tablets and wonder whether i am setting myself up for side effects.

i've even got a tube of ibuprofen gel to rub into my lower back, so i expect that soon i'll be so full of the stuff i'll be able to drive a six inch nail into my head without wincing.

any advice gratefully received!

i take this in tablet form for my tennis elbow..all i knoew is the doc gave me diddly squat that worled and within 2 weeks of taking devils claw the pain had gone and i was back to normal..

Ibuprofen is probably the best non-prescription pain reliever out there. And, unlike Acetaminophen (aka Paracetamol, aka Tylenol), it's also an anti-inflammatory. For me it works like a charm any time I have a muscle ache or joint ache, or on the infrequent occasion when my fallen arches start to bother me.

It's also the only pain killer my mother can take. Anything else either has no effect on her (eg, Tylenol) or gives her raging headaches (eg, Aspirin).

  truth is, i probably need an osteopath, but who can afford that?!

I take ibuprofen on a daily basis, but I make sure it's always after eating something, as it can irritate the stomach lining like non-dispersible aspirin does. Otherwise, it works fine for me.

Munzly's right about the stomach thing. There shouldn't be a problem taking it but it might be best to let yer doc know that you're taking it long term. xxx

  i told him i thought i was a pair of curtains and he said i should pull myself together.

I took wheel barrow loads of ibuprofen for my toothache and the only side effects I suffered was that I killed random strangers with a shovel. Nothing to worry about.....

Ibuprofen is ok hun just only take the amount stated though.

Have you tried acupuncture? Works by triggering brain's natural painkiller chemicals, putting it bluntly. I once had problems with my knee and they also gave me this musk oil stuff (!) to rub into it - right as rain ever since.

    Think of it as a life experience. There is something very strange about lying on a bed covered in long pins. It's strangely relaxing and a bit spacey and you have the oddest half-dreams.

whisky? it's the only thing no one else has suggested sorry to hear you are in pain it should NOT be allowed. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon

I echo what deana has said....acupuncture works! I suffer from the most awful pains in legs and while waiting for surgery the acupunture worked so well!
Look for a school of acupuncture. They will offer reduced rates while every treatment is overseen by a highly trained and fully registered acupuncturist.

I would combine it with paracetamol.....just for 12 hours max...ibup..then 2 hours later paracet..then 2 hours later etc...my dentist recommended that for tooth ache once...hot bath and whiskey on top....should numb it a while...Need to find the cause tho.

  thanks pip - someone i know also suggested that mix.
  i've had an x ray and blood test and they couldn't find anything wrong so i'm hoping it's a temporary problem.

Hi, I have found that Aleve (naproxen) is probably the best OTC pain reliever available. It is also an anti-inflammatory...Ibeuprofen(sp?) has never really done it for me but then again, neither do Tylenol (kills your liver) or Aspirin (thins your blood).
If you are interested in more natural pain relief, I put up a post on my blog this past Wednesday that is a pretty thorough list of herbal pain remedies, might be worth a shot for you...

SIDE EFFECTS OF IBUPROFEN

According to my research there have been instances when ibuprofen has given the patient a severe case of "eagle's head".

I'm sure that it won't happen to you!

  Ibuprofen once hospitalized me,took it for about a month without eating first which was pretty dumb.
  On the other hand,it was suggested to me and did actually work for a similar problem, two tennis balls in a sock tied at the end, (this is no joke),placed either side of your lower back and gently move your body sort of north / south to help re-align said discs....I accept no responsibility when you fail to get up for six months though....(now I'm kidding).

Like Jack, I use Devil's Claw and find it very good. I also use Arnica Gel which is a good alternative (and as powerful) to Ibuprofen gel. I also take cod liver oil and Glucosamine (though be careful if you have stomach problems, some people find they cause indigestion).

Another possibility is a Tens Machine, available for about £10 - 15 from Lloyds Pharmacies if you have one near you. A lot of people swear by them and I've found them very good.

Hope it gets better soon. Oh - check the heels of your shoes.... if they 'turn' slightly, or are worn down on one side more than the other, they could be causing the problem.

I'm not a pill popper either.

Years ago I had a nagging tennis elbow. My doctor gave me a cortisone injection and it never bothered me again.

More recently I had unbearable leg pain. I got fed up with this doctor passing it over with no more than silly remarks. Finally I asked him for a cortisone injection and hey presto no more pain at all.

Of course the injection is over and done with in a few seconds with no bad after effects at all.

Something to at least to consider.

  i had read somewhere that injections can be given but that they usually wait until you're screaming with pain!
