it's a small world

take a look at this picture first ... double click to see it full size...

can you just about make out that tiny dot at the bottom?
that's where we live.
how puny earth is, compared to the sun.

now take a look at this picture ... double click to see it full size

the sun is just about invisible at bottom left - a tiny dot compared to the massive stars of antares and betelgeuse.
they in turn are just tiny dots when we gaze up at the night sky.
antares is the 15th brightest star in our night sky. and it is 1000 light years from earth.

it really is a small world, isn't it?

Have you seen this...

It's a two millionth part of the sky. It contains over 3000 visible galaxies, each with thousands of millions of stars.

We are so tiny that anyone who thinks we are important should be slapped with a wet fish...

    Too kind! It's a pity the page formatting hides quite a lot of the picture, but the original can easily be found on the interwebnetwebthing, and the Wikipedia article about it is good too...

There is nothing magical about the universe. The fact that it works should amaze no one. Do you remember the programme " Tomorrows World" which attempted to make all things look like miracles when in truth they worked because they were designed to work !

That is awesome Kevin. The Universe is absolutely beautiful, and the scale more immense than we can imagine, but seeing our sun compared to Betelgeuse and Antares is, well, wow! They are massive beyond comprehension! No wonder the Universe has to be so big! Imagine the gravity though, closer study of their solar systems could show up all sorts of 'laws'. I wonder how 'near' you could get to it? Awesome!
